USA

The USA is situated in southern part of North America. It has borders with Canada on North, Mexico on South and the Confederation of Independent states in Alaska. The highest mountain in the USA is Mount McKinley in the Alaska range which is 6 194 m high. The longest rivers are the Mississippi and the Missouri. It is the third longest river system in the world after the Amazon and the Nile.


There are big variations of climate. Temperatures change from the arctic cold in northern Alaska to Subtropical warms of Hawaii. In Western coast temperature changes only little between summer and winter.



We can find many national parks there too, especially in the Rocky Mountains Region with beautiful nature. The most famous park is Yellowstone.



The population of USA is about 242 mil people. Around 79 percent of inhabitants live in urban areas. I speak about multicultural society because we can find there about 106 major ethnic groups. There are all the races mix together. The main language spoken here is American English, but various ethnic minorities speak their original languages, such as Chinese, Spanish and so on. American English differs from British English in vocabulary.



The head of the USA is president. USA consists of 50 federation states – 48 are on the continent.



We can find many interesting places in the USA. I'd like to visit Los Angeles. It is second large city on western coast. Here we can find the famous film centre Hollywood and luxurious quarters such as Beverly Hills. Each year in April the American film Academy awards Oscars for the best film of the year. Los Angeles is centre of crime too. There is situated California Technology Institute and the world biggest ZOO.



San Francisco is on of the cleanest and most picturesque cities in America.



Other important centres of south are f. e. New Orleans or Houston. In this town is centre of NASA and on Florida. The biggest centres in the East are Philadelphia – one of the oldest cities. Now it is centre of machinery and chemical industry.



New York is the biggest city in the USA. New York has five major parts: Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn. The black quarter – Harlem is in northern part of Manhattan. In southern Manhattan we can find special small towns – Small Italy, Chinatown and many more. The NY is notorious for its crime. There are drugs battles and gangs wars. The first skyscraper was built there in 1903. Now we can find there the world highest concentration of skyscrapers.



The capitol city of the USA is Washington. It is centre of government and culture. It is situated on East coast.
