The Countries Whose Language I Am Learning
Great Britain consist of the geographical aeas of England, Scotland and Wales. The political state is officiallu called the United Kindom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland. People from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are often offended when the terms England and English are used to refer to the whole country or its citizens. It is nevertheless frequenty equted with Britain as a whole because the name of the language thet is common to all parts of the UK is English.
The English are said to be taciturn, unsociable and lonf-suffering. The coldness may be partly due to their insularity. They have been unaccustomed to frequent social contats with therir neigbours in other countries. Due to general reluctance of the English to learn foreign languages or the violent behaviour of some British football supporters when abroad, some English people regard themselves as superior to foreigners. Another spect of insularity is the traditional love of the English for their home. Within the country itself, there is a marked distinction between the North and South. Higher unemplayment and lower living standards of the industrial north make northerners extrovert and friendlu, while southerners seem to be more reserved and self-centred.
The United States of America is a country lying in the southern half of North America, with additional territory in Alaska and Hawaii. It is made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia. I tis the world´s leading economic power with a highly productive argicultural szstem (soya, wheat, maize, pig aned cattle farming). Americans are friendly and open. For other nations they seem to be noisy, dressed in colourful clothing, attracting attention. Some of their custom seem to be not verz polite. They live to work because work is the mosti important thing in their lives.
The United Stats is generally divided into four regions: the North-East, the MId West, the South and the West. These regions are based on areas which for historic, geographic, economic or other reasons are commonly thougt of as belonging together. The North-East and the Mid West together formed the historical North as opposed to the South.
Both theUK and the USA have political sustems based on two opposed parties. While in Britain, teh two political arties are the Consrvative Party and the Labour Partz, in the USA the parties are the Republicans and the Democrats.
The Conservatives are the right-wing party whose aim is to conserve all that was good in Britain, to advocate a mixed economy, with some industries privately owned and others state-owned. It encourages private enterprice and property-owning. The Labour party is the main left-wing party which advocates moderate socilism and favours the nationalization of key industries and general social reform.
The Republikan Party tends to be more conservative, and support an economy based on free enterprise. Abraham Lincoln was their first president. The Democratic Party is regarded aj teh party of reform.
