Autralia is the smallest, lowest, driest and plainest continent. It is situated between the
Pacific and Indian oceans.
The most typical things for Australia are the deserts which occupies two thirds of the land.
there are no big rivers and the mountains are not very high. The highest peak is Mt. Kosciusko in
Australian Alps.
The Great Western Plateau occupies nearly half of the continent. In central Australia there
are three deserts - the Great Sandy Deserts, the Gibson Desert and the Great Victoria Desert.
The second part is the Central - Eastern Lowland. We can find there also many lakes such as
Lake Eyre and Lake Torrens. Lake Eyre is the lowest spot in Australia.
The third basic Australian area are the Australian Cordilleras which are along the eastern
coast of Australia and continue into Tasmania.
Australia has many different kinds of climate: tropical in the north, continental in the
interior and subtropical or temperate in the rest of the continent. The major part of Australia
is very dry. The summer lasts from December to February and it is very hot. Tasmania and Mt.
Kosciusko have occasionally the now. The coldest place is Hobart in tasmania.
Thanks to a different historical development, Australia has some very special animals like
kangorros, koalas, dingos, Tasmanian devels etc which are not seen in other continents.
The capital of Australia is Canberra. The biggest cities are mostly along the coast, e.g.
Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or Adelaide.
