SYSTEMS OF EDUCATION IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC, BRITAIN AND THE USA

GREAT BRITAIN
Education is compulsory from the age of 5 - 16. There are:

1) state's schools

2) independent schools = private schools

- parents must pay Fee, boarding schools

- mixed schools and single sex schools

- school year is divided into 3 terms

- in some schools pupils must wear school uniforms

Primary education - 2 stages: 1) infant schools (5-7 yrs.)

2) junior schools (7-11 yrs.)

Secondary education - 3 types of schools:

1) Grammar schools - they provide academic education, it means that they prepare students for the university.

2) Comprehensive schools - they provide both practical and theoretical education. These are very large schools (900-1500 st.)

3) Secondary modern schools - provide more general education

- when students finish secondary school they receive General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), or GCSE A-level (advanced).

Universities - the oldest: Oxford 12th century

Cambridge 13th century

- in 19th century were built so called "Red Brick" universities.

- The Open University - for adults

- DEGREE TITLES : Bakalar-Bachelor of Arts

of Science

this title is obtained after 4 years of study at university

Somebody attends postgraduate courses and he writes paper (thesis) so he obtains the title Master of Arts, Master of Science.



THE USA
- each state is responsible for the education

- private schools

state schools = public schools

Elementary school - grades 1 to 8 or 6

Secondary school - grades 9 to 12

- high school

Universities - usually private

- Harvard u. (Mass.)

- Yale (Conn.) 18th century

- Princeton (N.J.)

- College of Columbia



CZECH REPUBLIC
School attendance is compulsory from the age of 6 or 7 till 14 or 15. Schools are mainly state schools but there are also some private and church schools.

Pre-school education begins at the age of 6 months when children may attend creches until the age of 3, but usually the mothers stay with them at home. From the age of 3 till the age of 6 children attend kindergartens.

Primary education starts at basic schools and lasts 8 years.

Children receive an education foundation.

Secondary education lasts usually 4 years and may be divided

among - secondary grammar schools

- secondary special schools

- vocational schools which prepare young people for practical professions.

Students end their secondary education after passing their graduation exam. Then they usually sit for an entry exam at some university or college. For those who do not want to enter the university there are various types of two-year training courses.

Our school is called The Czechoslovak Business Academy of Doctor Edvard Benes. It was founded in 1872, but the building was builded in 1892. It is called after the 2nd Czechoslovak President, because he taught here French and National Economy in 1909-1915.



J.V.Sladek has also taught here, he taught English.

Contemporary Minister of Education studied here, Jaroslav Hasek also - he was not very successful student.

From the 3rd form our student must specialize in one of these branches: Banking and Insurance

Foreign Trade Economics

Business Managment - work in a fictitious enterprise.



In our school there are 800 students,60 teachers. Languages spoken here are English, German, French, Spain, Russian.
