Protecting environment - presentation

Good morning, ladies and gentleman.

First, let me introduce myself. I´m Daniela ... and I am a student of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Kosice. I´ll be talkinng today about environment, its pollution,destroying and protecting. Hope, you will enjoy it.


What is the environment? It means surroundings in which people, animals and plants exist. It are the things that we need to be alive, but it are also many man-made things and technical progress that harm the nature.

We can´t live on this planet without basic components which are needed for human existence - air, water and soil.


AIR
is a mixture of two known gases, oxygen and nitrogen. There are more else gases in the air, but only in minimum quantity. People, animals and plants couldn´t live without air. They need it for breathe and the plants for assimilation, without they couldn´t grow. Without oxygen there would be no fire. So we can see, that air is the basic condition for life on the Earth. Did you know that till 18th century people didn´t know composition of the air? They only used the knowledge of moving the air (and they used it by mills, sailing boats).


WATER
covers over 3/4 of Earth´s surface. It is also in underground and, naturally, in the air. Clouds consist of water steam. People, animals and plants couldn´t live without water. Their bodys contain more than a half of water, they need water unavoidable.


SOIL
it is a surface of all continents. It´s truth, that somewhere there is only a stone or a sand, but mostly there is a soil. The soil on the Earth is not the same fertility. In lowlands it has enough of mineral salts. It consists also of rests of plants. In height there is not good soil. It consists usualy of sand and less minerals.

I think, we have to be aware of importance of our air, water and soil. We should think more about its quality more than many times before. Why? Because it is now recognized that environmental problems affect all countries of the world.

There are many ecological problems of today. It is pollution of seas and oceans, air and soil, dissapearance of many species of animals and plants, acid rains, the weather changes, destruction of the ozone layer..

That all is caused by people. The great number of cars contribute much to the air pollution. Many factories are built near rivers into which they put their chemical waste. Amounts of industrial and city waste are placed near the lakes and rivers. Farmers use pesticides to kill certain insects, they also use fertilizers which also pollute the soil.

As I said, the burning of coal, exhaust from motor vehicles, emissions from factories causes the air pollution. Negative results of air pollution are a lung cancer, alergies, skin cancer and other health problems. In addition, the burning of oil, gas and coal gives rise to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide works like a glass in a greenhouse and when quantity of it increase in the atmosphere, the Earth´s atmosphere becomes warmer, because less heat can escape. It may cause melting of ice at the North and South Poles, which could give rise to floods. This phenomenon is called a greenhouse effect.

If we want to change the Earth climate, we must stop the greenhouse effect. We should burn less gas, oil and coal. We should use refrigerators and aerosol cans without CFC´s (chlorofluorocarbons), which lead to ozone hole. We should build more power stations, which would be not so harmful to the Earth like a wind-power station, a solar-power station or a hydro-power station.
In order to protect environment, we should recycle the waste - glass, paper, metals, tins, cans, use less PVC (plastics) and materials, that can´t be recycled.
We should plant more trees because trees take carbon dioxide from the air.

Everyone can start by himself. We should keep the nature clean, don´t throw away the garbage in the nature or on the street, buy drinks in glass´s bottles or cans that can be recycled, clean forests, streams.

There is a great need for the environmental education. Children of all ages should be taught about the man´s relationship to nature. They should be educated that this planet, weather, air, water, soil, people, animals, plants create one ecosystem.
NO PART CAN EXIST SEPARATELY.

We should feel more responsibility for the environment and learn to respect the nature.
