London sight - seeing tour

London is the capital of the United Kingdom. It is the 9th largest city in the world. It has got about 10 million inhabitans. It is situated on the river Thames. The great fire in 1666 destroyed almost all the city. There are many quaters in London: The City, The West End, The East End.

The City-Is the oldest and the historical centre of London. The West End-Is the centre of shopping. There are a lot of famous streets: Oxford street, Regent street, Piccadily Cirkus -there is a statue on witch is Eros.

The East End-There are many factories and ports.
The famous places we can see by various means of transport: red-double decker and by the world ´ s oldest underground. They are also the symbols of London. There are many places for interest: The houses of Parliament-were built in gothic style. There is a clock tower with Big Ben. It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, one of the ministers in the 19th century.

Whitehall-is the street, where the government offices are. Downing street 10-is the official home of British Prime Minister

Westminster Cathedral:
is one of the biggest Roman Catholic churches in England. Britain `s king and queens are crowned here. England `s famous people are buried here in the Poets Corner.

St. Paul `s Cathedral-This building is the work of the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren.

The Tower-served as a royal palace first, then prison and Zoo. Now it is a museum of arms. There are the 12 ravens too. The legend says if one of the ravens flies away, the Monarcy will collaps.

Tower Bridge-is one of the symbols of London. It can open in the middle and let large ships go through.

Trafalgar square-was named after Admiral Nelson `s victory over Napoleon at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.There is a Nelson` s coloum. On New Year ´ s Eve there are big fireworks.

Tate gallery-contains a collection of British painting.


Buckingham palace
is the London home of Queen Elizabeth II. The Mall-is a straight broad road that leads to the Palace.

The fire in London:
The old city of London had narrow, crooked streets, and wooden houses. It was a dirty city too. On 2nd of 1666 a bakery in Puddinglane near London Bridge caught fire. After a long hot summer the wooden houses were very dry. Wind was blew the flames from house to house, and in the streets the fire spread very quickly. The fire burned for four days. Nobody died in the fire. The people of London built a new city. The new houses was made of brick or stone not wood. The new street were straight and they were wider and cleaner too.
