Government
THE SYSTEMS OF GOVERMENT IN THE CR, THE UK AND THE USA
There are a lot of types of government in the whole world: dictatorship, parliamentary republic, presidental republic,
constitutional monarchy and absolut monarchy. I would like to mention 3 of them.
THE POLITICAL SYSTEM OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC
The Czech Republic is a parliamentary democracy. Its government is divided into three branches - the legislative
represented by parliament, the executive represented by the government and judicial power represented by the courts.
The head of the CR is the president. He is elected for a five-year term but no one cannot held this position more than
two times in a row. He appoints the judges, grants a pardon and he has also the power of veto. After his inauguration, he
usually declares an amnesty. The parliament consists of two houses: the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. There are
200 members in the Chamber of Deputies elected for 4 years. In the Senate there are 81 senators elected for 6 years.
The parliament ratify international treaties, send troops abroad and maybe the main function is to pass laws. The
executive power is represented by Prime Minister, ministers and local authorities. The municipal elections are held every
4 years. The juducial power is represented by the High Court in Brno. It can cancel some sentences.
There are several parties in the CR. The main ones are the Social Democracy and the Civic Democratic Party.
THE POLITICAL SYSTEM OF THE UNITED KINGDOM
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy but the Constitution is unwritten and it is based on statutes and
customs, traditional common law. The head of the monarchy is the Queen Elizabeth II. - but she hasn't got real power -
her function is only representative. She has quite a lot of duties: she is a commander-in-chief, head of the Church of
England, she pays state visits. She is also the head of the Commomnwealth.
The executive power represents the Cabinet (which is about 20 ministers) and the Shadow Cabinet (the members are
from the oposition). The Prime Minister is Tony Blair from Labour Party and he selects the other ministers.
The Parliament consists of two houses - the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The House of Commons has
635 seats and the elections take place every 5 years. The House of Lords has 1 175 members and it is divided into Lords
Spiritual and Lords Temporal.
THE POLITICAL SYTEM OF THE USA
The political system in the USA is called presidential democracy. The Constitution is based on the Bill of Rights from
1791 and has 26 amendments. This document guarantees freedom of religion, free speech etc. The president of the USA
is the head of the state, the holder of the highest executive power and the commander-in-chief of the army. He is the
man number one and the most important person for the whole country but he is also very important for the countries all
over the world. The traditional residence of the President is the White House in Washington, D.C. The president is
elected for a four-year-term. He appoints some members of the government and representatives of federal bodies...
Congress is the legislative body. It consists of two houses: the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House
of Representatives has 435 members who are elected for two-year-term. Each state has two senators in the Senat.
They are elected for six-year-term. National governments have wide power in the questions of law, education and taxes.
