Biography:
D. D. Eisenhower was born in Texas in 1890 as the third of seven sons. He
was good at sports in the high school, and received an appointment to West Point. While
serving in army in Texas, he met Mamie Doud and married her in 1916.
During the WW I he stayed in U.S., but after Japanese bombardment of
Pearl Harbor and U.S. entered the WW II, he commanded the Allied Forces landing in
North Africa in November 1942 and the invasion to Europe in 1944 and U.S. European
forces to the end of the war.
After the war, he took supreme command over the new NATO forces in
Europe in 1951. Republicans persuaded him to run for President in 1952, ending with his
victory.
In domestic policy Eisenhower kept a middle course (like in all he did),
continuing the most of the New Deal plan and Fair Deal programs, emphasizing a
balanced budget. He began desegregation of schools and also ordered the complete
desegregation of the Armed Forces. "There must be no second class citizens in this
country," he said.
While in foreign policy he tried to reduce the pressure of the Cold War
and fight communism. In 1953, the signing of a truce brought a peace Korean Peninsula.
The death of the Soviet leader Stalin the same year caused shifts in relations with Russia.
He also involved U.S. in Middle East.
In November 1956 he was elected for his second term and continued in
direction he choose in his first term. However while trying to help contain communism in
Asia, he involved U.S. in Vietnam, which than erupted in the bloody war. He also put
embargo on Cuba, where Fidel Castro took over the government in uprising in 1959.
Before he left office in January 1961, he said that maintaining an adequate
military is necessary, but cautioned that, high and continuous military expenses might be
dangerous to nations economy. He died, after a long illness, on March 28, 1969.

Evaluation and Contribution:
In his military career he won the WWII for U.S. forces, which made him
very popular and which he would be ever remembered for, maybe not in U.S. itself but in
Europe. He realized the danger of the raising communism and tried to contain it with all
possible peaceful ways. Than he ended Korean War with good compromise, even if many
people don't thing so, he launched interstate highway system, established the NASA and
begun with building of U.S. nuclear arsenal, but he wanted to avoid it's usage at all costs.
Thus many things he was a good president, who achieved great goals and made lot of
good for the nation.
