Housing

Almost half of all British families own the houses in which they live. In order to buy a house a family in Britain does not need to have all the money. There are many special banks from which it is possible to borrow uo to 90 % of the value of the house. Of course, not everyone wishes to buy a house and renting is very common, too.

There are several types of houses in Britain : a terraced house, a semidatached house, a detached house, a bungalow and a cottage. Terraced houses are built in a row and are joined one to another to for

English language

THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGES.
No living man as a social being can exist without knowledge of foreign languages at present. The need to speak at least one foreign language is great.

We have felt in our country especially after the events of November Velvet Revolution. There`s not only the possibility to travel to foreign coutries both privately or organized. In such causes it is surely much more comfortable when one can make oneself understood in ordinary everyday situations such as doing shopping, booking, o

Daniel Defoe: Moll Flanders

To what extent can an individual be influenced by a social system?

Through the character of Moll Flanders, Daniel Defoe presents us an critical view on the 17th century England, especially introduces us the life of a woman comming from the lower social class of London. Moll Flanders, though not her real name, accounts of her own life history from the time she is born to her very last years. Moll Flanders is full of contradicions. On one side we see a person she would like to become and on the other is the real Moll. Her life meets

The Best Holliday on Malta

Last year, I, my brother Miloš and our parents were on Malta. It is such a hot and dry island. It is as small as Bratislava. The island is in the south of Europe and it is
surrounded by the Mediterranean See. The capital city is Valleta. There is around fifteen degrees Celsius from December to February, thirty-five degrees Celsius from March to May, fourty-five degrees Celsius from June to August and thirty degrees Celsius from September to November. We travelled by car from Trenčín to Salerno, Italia. It took twelve hours. Then we tr

THE PHOTOGRAPH
The photograph was invited by French Joseph Niepce when he found out how to save the picture in the „camera obscura“ (darkroom) – in a box. By that time camera obscura was used only by painters, to whom it helped to draw the nature. The first photograph was taken by Niepce in the year 1826. In year 1837, his younger colleague Louis Daguerre invented the method that reduced the time of exposition to less than half minute. That enabled the boom of portrait pictures. The basics of modern photography laid down William Fo

Future plans

Everyone has to decide what he wants to do when he finishes elementary school. One option is to continue in secondary school. The second option is to choose another branch of the educational system. It is very important to consider your interests when you choose your future profession. Everyone would like to be good at what he chooses.

Sometimes, people continue to study even after they recieve their degree. It is always important to learn more, and in some professions, you have to constantly study in order to be at the forefront

My daily routine

I usually get up at 6:30 a.m., when I hear that awful sound of my mobile phone. In summer it´s good, but in winter I hate getting up and leaving that warm place – the bed. Sometimes I také a shower in the morning to wake up. I have breakfast every day. It takes me 20 minutes. I watch telly, while I´m eating it. Then I brush my teeth, get dressed and prepare my snack. Finally, I go to school at 7:30 a.m. I´m lucky that grammar school I attend, is in my home town and I don´t have to commute every day to Prostějov. School begins at 8:00 a.

Services

Services are an important part of a national economy and show a maturity of each country. The availability of services makes people´s lives easier. Services include health service, educational system, trade, tourism, traffic, small services (manicurists, hairstylists, craftsmen,...), etc. Instead of preparing our food at home we can have it at a restaurant. We can have our clothes cleaned at the dry cleaner´s, our shoes repaired at the shoemaker´s, our coats, skirts, blouses or other pieces of garment mended or made-to-measure at the tailor

Cultural life

I often suffer from a lack of free time. It isn´t easy for a young person to find the time to enjoy culture. Children aren´t generally interested in culture at their age, while adults are short of free time. Despite being so busy, almost everybody finds the time to go to the cinema, the theatre or an exhibition. Cultural life in our town isn´t so rich as in large cities. In spite of that, there are some ways how to spend leisure time. We can go to the cinema, dancing, or we can stay at home and listen to the radio, watch television and read

Places

Prague

First I´ll talk about Prague. In my life I´ve visited this city three or four times. I think it´s very beautiful city. Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and the political, cultural and economic centre of the country. It has a population of over 1.2 million people and it spreads out on both banks of the river Vltava. The whole city consists of 10 administrative districts. The oldest parts are the Old Town, The Lesser Town, the New Town, Josefov, Hradčany and Vyšehrad. The Prague Castle is the dominant of the c

Social security and health services

The comprehensive social security system was introduced in Britain in 1948. It provides benefits, so that nobody need to be without the means. The benefits under the National Insurance Acts include the sickness benefit, the injury benefit, the unemployment benefit, the maternity benefits. The maternity allowance, paid for 18 weeks before and after the birth of a child and the child benefit paid for each child up to the age of 16 or when studying to the age of 19, then the invalid care allowance, the retirement pension, paid to any man of 65 and

Health and diseases

We should take care of our health because it´s the most important thing in our life, but we don´t realize it until we´re ill. Money won´t cure a person with an incurable illness. Chance may sometimes lead us into situations from which there isn´t escape. We should eat healthy food, do sports and avoid stress situations. Everybody in our country has the right to choose a doctor (state or private one). Medical care is provided for our citizens from birth to death and is free of charge. Soon after birth each child is vaccinated against illnes

Travelling

Travelling is very popular in the 21st century and that is why it is so common. Nowadays we are able to travel even to distant countries, where we can get acquainted with new cultures, interesting people and their customs, and compare the differences between the way of living in our country and the land we are visiting. Travelling has some advantages (fun, adventure, the excitement of seeing new places, learning about new cultures, etc.) and disadvantages. Travelling may be dangerous and for some people it´s very expensive. We can meet bad peo

Fashion

People have different attitude to fashion. But what is it fashion? It´s an important thing in modern society, a big business (because nobody wants to be naked), the way we can express our personality and an art. Each person has his own style and taste. We will scarcely find two individuals who agree on every detail of their clothes. People wear clothes according to their taste, mood and their character. Everybody wants to look good. It´s quite difficult to put the clothes together because they should be well-combined. Some people have excelle

Shopping

Shopping is an everyday activity that we do, when we need to buy something to eat or drink, something to decorate and to furnish our house or flat, or we can buy things just for our personal pleasure.
Nowadays shopping has become a sophisticated art or science.

When we go shopping, we can go either to a big department store or to the shop which specializes in some extra goods, e.g.
the greengrocer specializes in fruit and vegetables (ranging from products that can be grown in our climate to exotic tropical fruit. In

Sports and games

People got new possibilities and new ideas how to spend their spare time. Nowadays, sports are one of the most popular leisure time activities. Sports play an important part in the life of people all over the world. Sports offer us refreshments, relaxation, keep us fit physically and mentally and help us to lose some weight and build our muscles. During sports events you can meet a lot of new people and see how it feels to be a winner or a loser. The increase of interest in sports is best illustrated by the appearance of new sports facilities (

Generation gap

Every human being is unique. Perhaps that is what makes us so interesting for each other. We have our interests, opinions, likes and dislikes. We can choose the way how to spend our free time e. g. with our friends who are usually people with similar interests and opinions.
What we cannot choose is our family – brothers, sisters, but first of all – our parents.
We don΄t agree with them for many times. Our opinions differ, our ideas differ, our feelings and interests differ so much as well. This is called „generation
